# Inventory item

The `InventoryItem` family — 7 operations.

An inventory item is one variant’s stock position at one location — the on-hand, reserved, in-transit, damaged and held balances, what that leaves available to sell, and the average cost its movements have built up. Create it here to open the position before stock arrives (posting a receipt for a variant new to the location opens one as well; no other movement does), read its balances, and open its Stock Card for the movements behind them and its stock by bin for where the goods sit. Deactivating pauses it; retiring it needs every balance at zero.
