# createAppointment

mutation · in the family [Appointment](/reference/appointment/)

## What it does

Request an appointment — a service booking (names the service product) or an order pickup (names the order), against one or more resources at a location.

Request an Appointment; requires the unrestricted capability.

## What happens

Born requested — no capacity is held yet; confirm reserves the slot. The lead-time and maximum-advance policies gate the window.

## Who may call it

Capability area: **Selling** — Ringing sales, serving customers and issuing invoices.

- Owner
- Manager
- Associate Manager
- Sales Associate
- Cashier
- An API key whose scope allows `api:createAppointment`

## Arguments

| Name | Type | Required | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `input` | [NewAppointmentInput](/types/NewAppointmentInput/) `NewAppointmentInput!` | yes | No further notes. |

## Returns

[Appointment](/types/Appointment/) `Appointment!` — An Appointment — a booking of 1..8 SchedulableResources at an LF for a time window: a service-type product sale (purpose service — variantId REQUIRED, the styleType walk gates it) OR an order pickup (purpose pickup — orderId REQUIRED, the order being collected). The ratified lifecycle VERBATIM: confirm reserves capacity (the RESBOOK calendar rows; the gate is CAPACITY-ONLY — CONFLICT/DOUBLE_BOOKED unless the appointment.overbook_allowed policy admits); no_show fires from the scheduler ONLY (noShowAt = startAt + the appointment.no_show_window_minutes policy, stamped at confirm — NO caller op); rescheduled = a DOOMED terminal superseded by the linked successor (born requested — ITS confirm re-runs the capacity gate); completed may LINK an order for billing (the complete-time orderId — auto-minting a line is a named growth). durationMinutes ≤ 1440 (24h — the overlap-lookback bound). The create-time gates: appointment.lead_time_minutes + appointment.max_advance_days.

## Errors this call can answer

- `VALIDATION/INVALID` — Something in the request is not valid. ([VALIDATION](/errors/VALIDATION/))
- `AUTHN/REQUIRED` — Sign in to do this. ([AUTHN](/errors/AUTHN/))
- `AUTHZ/FORBIDDEN` — Your role does not allow this action. ([AUTHZ](/errors/AUTHZ/))
- `RATE_LIMIT/THROTTLED` — Too many requests in a short time. ([RATE_LIMIT](/errors/RATE_LIMIT/))
- `NOT_FOUND/*` — That record could not be found. ([NOT_FOUND](/errors/NOT_FOUND/))
- `CONFLICT/*` — The record’s state, or a change made in the meantime, does not allow this; the codes are on the CONFLICT page. ([CONFLICT](/errors/CONFLICT/))
- `VALIDATION/VERSION_REQUIRED` — The request did not say which app version it came from. ([VALIDATION](/errors/VALIDATION/))

## Dry run

Add `dryRun: true` to the request envelope (`extensions.at`) to rehearse this call: every check runs, the write is rehearsed against the current records and nothing is stored; the answer is the refusal a real call would give, or the record it would create. Every response to a rehearsal carries `dryRun: true`, so a rehearsed record is never mistaken for a saved one.
